Within the queer community, I’ve found myself lured again toward performing queerness, by presenting my gender in an androgynous way or omitting men from my dating history in order to be seen as a “real” queer person or to avoid biphobia.Īs I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to understand what Maya Angelou meant when she said, “You only are free when you realize you belong no place - you belong every place - no place at all.

At other points, I’ve been vocal about my identity but nonetheless been erased my sexuality was assumed to be straight when I presented femme or was dating a man and gay when I presented as masc and dated a woman or someone who was visibly queer. When I was younger, I found myself performing straightness in order to gain acceptance and safety from homophobia in my community. Moving through these different worlds, I’ve found myself faced with the same unspoken question: “Are you one of us, or one of them?” Honestly, I walk the line. Each side often wants me to remain fixed to one end of the spectrum or another, and transcending that boundary, forward or back, can be a treacherous journey. I see my personal challenges as part of a larger struggle faced by people with multisexual identities as we inhabit both the queer and straight worlds. When I look at the mental health disparities faced by bi youth, they reflect my own life and make sense of what I’ve lived through.
